UCA’s Orr receives Southland honor

CONWAY – Central Arkansas junior guard Kamry Orr was named the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced this week.

The Sugar Bears (13-4, 6-0), now on an eight-game win streak, hosted New Orleans

(7-10, 3-3) on Wednesday and will welcome fellow defending regular season champion Abilene Christian (12-4,

6-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m. on

ESPN3.

Orr began her collegiate career at Sam Houston State, where she was the team’s third-leading scorer as a freshman. She transferre­d to Northeaste­rn Oklahoma A&M and was selected to the all-Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference and all-Region II teams while leading the squad to a

28-3 record, Region II championsh­ip and National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n national tournament berth.

The junior guard and graduate of Little Rock Central High School, set career highs both games last week for Central Arkansas. She scored 27 points at Incarnate Word (3-13,

2-3) before topping that with

32 at Nicholls State (8-9, 3-3). She outscored the Colonels

16-11 in the fourth quarter. Orr shot 60 percent from

3-point range and made six shots from distance in the two games, more than the Sugar Bears’ two opponents combined four) 3-pointers made for the week.

Orr shot 89 percent from the free throw line and 48.6 percent from the field, while also leading Central Arkansas in steals at Incarnate Word and in assists at Nicholls. She registered seven steals, while logging 36.5 minutes per game as the Sugar Bears held their opponents to an average of

41.5 points for the week. The honorable mentions for this week’s award were Breanna Wright, Abilene Christian; Randi Brown, New Orleans; and DeA’ngela Mathis, Lamar. Southland Players of the Week are presented by UniversalC­oin.com.

Orr is the Sugar Bears’ leading scorer at 15.1 points per game.
