Girls in STEM workshop today

- BETH REED

Mid-America Science Museum’s monthly Girls in STEM program will host three more workshops, including one today, in the museum’s Alliance Rubber Company Tinkering Studio.

Girls in STEM workshops provide girls who are at least 6 years old with the opportunity to focus on concentrations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Kimari Watson, education associate for the museum, said the workshops have been so popular that classes were added in April and May. Workshops take place the first Saturday of each month.

“In April we will be focusing on coding, which we did probably two or three months ago,” Watson said. “The one in May will be chemistry based.”

This is the second year for the Girls in STEM program, which starts in September. Most classes have been full this year, she said, with several recurring students.

“The girls really enjoy it, and a lot are really hungry for the knowledge,” Watson said. “These girls love looking at things from a different perspective, and there are so many different portions we cover. They get really into it.”

According to Doug Herbert, director of education, the museum often gets asked why they don’t offer workshops for boys.

“Every program we have available is typically for both boys and girls except for Girls in STEM, and that’s because this program is focused on really getting girls involved in science learning at a young age,” he said.

Parents are welcome to come and participate, and Girls in STEM workshops are led by a female educator at the museum.

The cost is $5, plus museum general admission. Today’s workshop will concentrate on 3D Printing and Design.
