Mountain Pine wins at home with walk-off triple

MOUNTAIN PINE — Trailing, 6-0, in the third inning and, 8-3, in the fifth, Mountain Pine saved its best for last against visiting Ouachita Monday night.

The Red Devils (5-8, 2-2 in 1A/2A-12) plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth to force extra innings before senior Matthew Herron delivered the hit of the game.

With the score tied ,8-8, in the bottom of the eighth, Herron ripped a walk-off triple as Mountain Pine stormed back to claim a dramatic 9-8 win over the Warriors (13-6, 2-1).

“We stuck with our approach and battled through the adversity in the field,” said Mountain Pine coach Joseph Alderman. “I am really proud of my guys for never giving up.

Both teams flashed their skills at the plate as the Warriors finished with eight hits and the Red Devils racked up nine hits.

Leadoff man Kayden Anzaldua had three hits in four at-bats for Mountain Pine, finishing with one double and four runs scored.

“Kayden going 3-for-4 was huge for us,” Alderman said. “Carter Chapman’s double got us going in the third. Aggresive baserunnin­g put the pressure on our opponent and our pitching did well.”

Carter Chapman and Herron each had two hits for the Red Devils, Chapman with one double and a team-high two RBIs. Chad Graves, Josh Walpole and Herron each had one RBI.

John Fowler and Greyson Huneycutt each had two hits with one RBI for Ouachita, while junior Will Hixon led the team with two RBIs.

Winners of four of their last five games, the Red Devils are scheduled travel to Cutter Morning Star (1-7, 0-4) today before playing at Abundant Life (4-11, 3-1) on Thursday.

HOT SPRINGS-HOPE

Hope had no answer for Hot Springs starting pitcher Ben Slate Monday night.

The senior right-hander surrendere­d just two runs on four hits with one walk and a season-high 16 strike-

outs as the Trojans (7-5, 2-5 in 5A/6A-6) rolled to an 8-2 win over the visiting Bobcats (2-11, 0-7).

Hope scored two runs in the top of the first inning behind an RBI from Darton Davis before Slate settled in for good.

As the senior held the Bobcats in check over the next five frames, the Trojans built a 5-2 lead by the fourth inning before setting the final margin with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Hayden Wisener had two hits in three at-bats for Hot Springs, finishing with one double, one RBI and two runs scored. Braden Sarver led the team with two RBIs, while Dakota Hawkins and Elias Parker each drove in one run.

Davis led the Bobcats with two hits in three at-bats and Hunter Hellums doubled for the team’s lone extra-base hit of the contest.

After hosting De Queen (8-7, 4-3) on Tuesday, the Trojans will play their first of three consecutiv­e games on the road Friday at Camden Fairview (5-11, 2-5).

JESSIEVILL­E-HARMONY GROVE

HASKELL — A five-run third inning by Haskell Harmony Grove spelled doom for visiting Jessievill­e Monday night.

Leading 2-0 after two innings, the Lions (7-7, 1-4 in 3A/4A-8) were unable to bounce back after the offensive barrage from the Cardinals (9-10, 4-3), falling 5-3 for their third consecutiv­e loss.

Chase Chilton and Hunter Hilson each had two RBIs for Harmony Grove, Hilson finishing with one double and one run scored in three at-bats.

Sean Small led the Cardinals with two hits in three plate appearance­s, driving in one run and scoring once.

Oliver Nasilai and Chase Pedersen each finished with two hits in three plate appearance­s for Jessievill­e, while Aaron Ford had one hit and a team-high two RBIs.

Dalton McClard suffered the loss for the Lions, surrenderi­ng five runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts in three innings pitched.

Harmony Grove’s James McCormick allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, Jessievill­e is scheduled to host rival Fountain Lake (10-3, 2-2) today before facing visiting Gurdon (3-10, 0-5) on Friday.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

TEXARKANA — Lakeside picked up a 1-0 victory over Texarkana Monday at Razorback Stadium.

Lakeside (9-3-1, 4-2 5A/6A-6) had several shots early, including one around 10 minutes in by Caleb Pursell. The senior midfielder drew the Texarkana (2-8, 0-7) keeper off the goal, but the shot went wide.

Senior midfielder Russell Gartner took an indirect free kick from around 40 yards away that was redirected into the right side of the net to put the Rams up 1-0 in the 24th minute.

Lakeside’s defense held the Razorbacks scoreless for the team’s third clean-sheet of the season.

The Rams hosted El Dorado (4-3-2, 2-3) Tuesday before Thursday’s match at Hope (5-5, 3-4). Texarkana is set to visit Hot Springs (7-3, 4-1) Friday.

Girls

Lakeside struggled early as Texarkana dealt the Lady Rams their second-straight conference loss, 6-1, Monday at Razorback Stadium.

The Lady Razorbacks (4-5, 4-3) jumped on Lakeside (7-6, 4-2) early, scoring four goals in the first 15 minutes of the game.

Ashley Gayle connected on a corner kick from Melissa Perrigo to put the Lady Rams on the board with 9:45 remaining in the first half.

Lakeside held Texarkana scoreless for the remainder of the first half, but the Lady Razorbacks struck with 26:51 left in the second half to stretch their lead back out to four goals before scoring the final goal of the match nine minutes later.

Keeper Jessica Bishop finished with 10 saves in the match, giving up all six goals, and Zoe Cattaneo had one save. Zoe Helton had a pair of steals for the Lady Rams.

The Lady Rams had just four shots on the night, three on target compared to 14 shots by the Lady Razorbacks.

Lakeside played host to El Dorado (7-2, 2-2) Tuesday and is set to travel to Hope (2-8, 2-5) Thursday. Texarkana played host to Class 4A Nashville (4-5) Tuesday before visiting Hot Springs (0-7, 0-4) Friday.
