OM Project aims to help community
The Ozark Mission Project will focus on improving the Hot Springs community with freshly painted houses, new wheelchair ramps and sturdy refurbished porches from June 24-30.
For over 32 years the Project has assisted in various household projects throughout Arkansas for those unable to do the work due to physical or financial reasons.
Justin Nicklas, co-director of the Hot Springs camp, said, “One of the neatest things is watching the students see their hands on a finished project. Sometimes they see their neighbor, who’s homebound, come outside for the first time after they’ve built a wheelchair ramp.”
The nonprofit has grown to host 12 camps throughout Arkansas with over 1,000 youths and young adult participants that contribute each summer. Over 80 high school students and volunteers have registered this year to aid their Hot Springs neighbors.
“Doing the work for the neighbors is important, but listening to their story is as well. The neighbor gets to learn from the kids and a bond forms there that can last a lifetime,” Nicklas said.
Nicklas’ nephew participated in a camp in 2016 and continually visits the neighbor he helped each time he’s in the area.
“I hope to see more empowerment for our neighbors. We hope to strengthen those friendships and the love,” Nicklas said.
Nicklas said there are 15 project applications and no specific criteria is required for applicants. He said they carefully evaluate each applicant and try to do as many projects as possible.
Interested applicants can pick up an application for help at Gross Funeral Home, 120 Wrights Ave., or visit http://www.ozarkmissionproject.org. Applications are due before June 15.
