GCHS journal gets award
The Garland County Historical Society’s journal, The Record 2017, was awarded the Arkansas Historical Association’s Walter L. Brown Award for Best Use of Graphics at the association’s recent annual conference in Fort Smith.
The Record’s editor, Liz Robbins, said in the press release, “We’re grateful for this recognition of the outstanding work of our journal’s graphic designers, Donnavae Hughes and Dan Anderson.”
Anderson explained, “Graphic design is the process of mixing images, text and graphics to create an appealing visual image. Our goal is to bring history alive through graphic design that engages readers with the rich history of Garland County.”
Anderson designed the covers and did some interior design. The front cover features a view of the Dierks Forest Inc. (Weyerhaeuser) Building at 810 Whittington Ave. The building was designed in 1956 by architect I. Granger McDaniel, who is profiled in the journal. The back cover shows postcards of Hot Springs scenes from the society’s James J. Dowds Jr. Collection.
Hughes did much of the interior design. She commented, “My emphasis in the interior design is to make the articles easy and pleasurable to read. The placement of the text and even details like font size, line height and line length influence how readily the reader is drawn into an article. I also emphasize and show the details of historic photos. Each photo (and The Record includes many, many photos) must be enhanced and inserted into the best place to illustrate the meaning of the text.”
The society has published an annual edition of The Record since 1960.
