Woman arrested after allegedly attacking city police officer
A reportedly intoxicated woman was arrested on multiple charges late Sunday after allegedly causing a disturbance and attacking a Hot Springs police officer.
Courtney Taylor Schanlaber, 21, of 2108 Hobson Ave., was taken into custody at her residence shortly after 11 p.m. and charged with a felony count of second-degree battery, punishable by up to six years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, obstructing government operations, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
She was later released on $5,500 bond and is set to appear June 5 in Garland County District Court.
According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly before 11 p.m., Officer Christopher Savage responded to the residence regarding a disturbance in progress and made contact with two men and one woman, later identified as Schanlaber. The men both stated Schanlaber was “highly intoxicated” and trying to leave in her vehicle.
Officers noted she was slurring her speech, had bloodshot, watery eyes and a strong odor of intoxicants on her breath. Officers also noted there were several empty beer cans in the yard and there were keys in a vehicle parked in the carport.
While trying to talk to her, Schanlaber allegedly became belligerent and told officers to “get the (expletive) off my property” and they explained they were there to investigate complaints of someone screaming profanity.
The officers warned her they would arrest her if she didn’t calm down and told her to go inside. They asked the two men to secure her keys so she couldn’t drive away and after she went inside the officers started to leave.
At that point, they heard Schanlaber screaming again inside, saying, “That’s my (expletive) car and I will do what I want with it” and then she came outside and continued yelling profanity and asking about her keys.
Officers approached her again and she reportedly yelled, “You can’t do (expletive) to me, I’m on private property.” At that point, officers tried to take her into custody but she fell to the ground and rolled under the car in the carport.
Savage said he grabbed her left foot in an attempt to get her out from under the car and she allegedly kicked him six times, five times to both knees and once in the left elbow.
She was finally taken into custody and allegedly continued to resist and scream profanity all the way to the jail. She reportedly refused to answer questions or cooperate with the booking process and was finally put into an isolation cell.
It was noted Savage sustained a small laceration to his elbow and had discoloration to both knees from being kicked.
