Oaklawn horses prominent in stakes across the country

Horses accounting for victories in

10 of the 31 stakes races run this year at Oaklawn Park are entered the next few days in stakes events around the country, the bulk coming in Prairie Meadows’ annual Iowa Festival of Racing.

The Festival began Thursday with Oaklawn allowance winner Dreamcall taking the $100,000 Iowa Distaff and

2017 Purple Martin Stakes winner and

2018 allowance winner Golden Mischief winning the $100,000 Saylorvill­e Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 furlongs.

Perennial leading trainer Steve Asmussen and perennial leading jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. teamed up to win the Grade 3 $200,000 Iowa Oaks with I Am Julie, who finished 5 1/2 lengths in front of Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes winner Cosmic Burst. Fantasy Stakes winner Sassy Sienna, the post time favorite, finished unplaced.

Friday’s Prairie Meadows card included the $100,000 Iowa Sprint Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at 6 furlongs and the $250,000 Iowa Derby for 3-yearolds

at 1 1/16 miles.

Wilbo, winner of the $125,000 King Cotton Stakes Feb. 3 at Oaklawn, was the 3-1 program favorite for the Iowa Sprint Handicap. Apprehende­r, winner of Oaklawn’s King Cotton Stakes in 2013 and 2014, is also entered in the Iowa Sprint Handicap.

The 5-2 program favorite for the Iowa Derby was High North, winner of the

$150,000 Northern Spur Stakes April 14 at Oaklawn. The 3-1 second choice in the program is Lionite, who broke his maiden April 14 at Oaklawn.

Two stakes winners from the 2018 Oaklawn meeting are entered today at Belmont Park.

My Boy Jack, winner of the Grade 3

$500,000 Southwest Stakes, is scheduled to run in the Grade 1 $1.2 million Belmont Derby Invitation­al for 3-year-olds at 1 1/4 miles on the turf.

Probable post time for the Belmont Derby Invitation­al, which goes as race

10, is 5:50 p.m.

Whitmore, the top sprinter the last

two years at Oaklawn, is entered in the Grade 2 $350,000 Belmont Sprint Championsh­ip at 7 furlongs. Whitmore is to be ridden by Santana won the $125,000 Hot Springs Stakes March 10 and Grade 3 $400,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap April 14.

Probable post time for the Belmont Sprint Championsh­ip, which goes as race 7, is 4:11 p.m. It is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event for the sprint division.

Seven Trumpets, seventh in the Southwest Stakes, is entered in the Grade 3 $300,000 Dwyer Stakes today at Belmont Park. Probable post time for the 1-mile Dwyer, which goes as race 6, is 3:36 p.m.

Hoppertuni­ty, winner of Oaklawn’s Grade 2 $600,000 Rebel Stakes for 3-year-olds in 2014, is entered in the Grade 2 $700,000 Suburban Stakes today at Belmont Park. Probable post time for the 1 1/4-mile Suburban, which goes as race 9, is 5:18 p.m.

Another 3-year-old filly stakes winner this year at Oaklawn, Red Ruby, is the 3-1 program favorite for the Grade 3 $300,000 Delaware Oaks today at Delaware Park. Red Ruby won the $125,000 Martha Washington Feb. 10, Oaklawn’s first major two-turn test for 3-year-old fillies. Probable post time for the Delaware Oaks, which goes as race 10, is 4:45 p.m.

Hence represente­d Asmussen’s 500th career Oaklawn victory in 2017 and was entered Friday in the Grade 3 $300,000 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap Friday at Prairie Meadows. Probable post time for the 1 1/8-mile Cornhusker, which goes as race 8, is 9:30 p.m. Also entered is Matrooh, a two-time winner this year at Oaklawn.

Oaklawn-raced Mr. Jagermeist­er ($2.20) won the $50,000 Victor S. Myers Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters Wednesday at Canterbury Park.
