Lions hand Hornets first loss

MOUNT IDA — Defending 2A-7 conference champion Mount Ida began its defense Friday with a convincing 34-6 victory against previously undefeated Mineral Springs.

The Lions (4-0, 1-0) took control early and ran for 412 yards on 69 carries. They led, 34-0, before the Hornets (3-1, 0-1) got on the board with a late score in the fourth quarter.

Senior quarterbac­k Cade Jackson set the tone early with a 60-yard rushing touchdown on the opening drive of the game. The Lions led, 8-0, after a successful 2-point run by senior running back Jonathan Lagrange.

The home defense forced a safety late in the quarter to take a 10-0 lead into the second frame. The Lions extended the lead on a fiveyard touchdown run and 2-point conversion by senior Jaythan Dillon.

Jackson scored again from nine yards out before halftime. The Lions led, 26-0, after a

2-point conversion by senior Tyler Hamilton. Senior running back Gage Dyer added a two-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Jackson scored the team’s final points on the

2-point conversion.

Braden Williams scored for Mineral Springs on a 78-yard pass play from quarterbac­k Terrell Fricks in the final minutes of the game.

Jackson averaged nine yards per carry for

117 yards and two touchdowns. Lagrange ran

25 times for 133 yards and a score. Hamilton finished with 18 carries for 100 yards. Dyer had seven carries for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Defending Class 2A state champion Foreman (4-0, 1-0) kept pace with Mount Ida on Friday with a 39-0 victory at Spring Hill (1-2,

0-1). Mount Ida was ranked No. 1 in the most recent Arkansas Sports Media High School Football Poll. Foreman is ranked No. 2.

Mount Ida is scheduled for a road game on Friday at Murfreesbo­ro (2-2, 1-0). The Rattlers defeated Lafayette County (0-4, 0-1), 20-0, Friday night. Foreman is also scheduled to play on the road at Dierks (0-4, 0-1).
