Supports change

- Edna Melton Hot Springs

Dear editor:

My family retired here from Detroit in 1978 and I have seen a lot of ups and downs while growing up in this beautiful spa city. Much of the historic flair has been lost to parking lots and progress. Crime has always been an issue here not unlike Detroit. Unsolved murders, thefts, chop shops, drugs, gangs … you name it and this city has been plagued with it and with no fault to our police and crime fighting units who continuously fight the revolving door of justice.

While crime downtown doesn’t appear rampant, I highly believe it is underreported. During the day, I have been hit up for money almost every time I load up for hot water. Beggars on every street corner and intersection now. While some things improve, other things just decline specifically in our historic neighborhoods.

We need some change and fresh ideas for our future and the preservation of our historic properties, which is why I’ve decided to personally endorse Brenda Brandenburg for mayor. I believe she has the ability to represent the city in a smart and professional manner while making wise choices with our budget dollars, not to mention enforcement of our city ordinances. We have all witnessed her passion and devotion with regards to saving the Majestic Hotel and while I disagreed that this property could be saved, I appreciated her tenacity to hold people accountable to do the right thing by the local taxpayers.

Not very many people will give up their precious time for public service, but I feel that Brenda was born to do this and will do the right thing with an open mind to all suggestions. I encourage everyone to get out and vote, and let’s keep our city moving forward.
