Upholstery Club to provide five-day class

-

The Upholstery Club of Garland County Extension Homemakers Council will offer an upholstery class from 8:30a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17-19, 22 and 23 at the EHC Educational Building at the Garland County Fairgrounds, 4831 Malvern Road. Registration is to be made in person at the Extension Office,

236 Woodbine. Telephone 6236841 with questions. Due to the number of available instructors, the number of projects accepted will be limited, so apply early.

Participants will learn the basics of upholstering furniture. Most pieces, such as sofas or chairs, are acceptable. No recliners will be accepted.

Only one piece per person is allowed unless the project consists of multiple small pieces which take a short time to finish (such as the seats of a set of dining room chairs or cushions). Call Frank Fulmer at 525-8898 or Libby Jacques at 760-1181 for further information.

It is required that participants know how to sew on a sewing machine if their projects need it. Participants are to furnish their own fabric, no plaids. Extra material should be purchased if the print needs to be matched, similar to wallpaper motifs that need matching. Extra supplies needed for the project, such as cording, polyester or cotton batting, webbing, zippers, etc., may be purchased from the club at a reasonable charge, payable at the end of the class.

The cost of the class is $35. This fee is to defray the cost of miscellaneous supplies, upkeep and purchase of club equipment and usage fee of the EHC building. When students finish their projects, they are asked to help others who are not finished and to not leave until they have helped clean up the building. Participants are to bring a helper with them the first day to help remove the old upholstery which is not to be taken off prior to class, as the instructors need to see how it is put on. Removed fabric pieces will be labeled and used as patterns.

Each student needs to bring an upholsterer’s staple puller, pliers, hammer, scissors, needles and pins, tape measure, seam ripper and marking pens, as members’ supplies are limited.

A clean old sheet or tarp is a must to protect the project.

The classes will break for an hour lunch, so bag lunches should be brought.
