Golden Mischief, Blue Prize earn Breeders’ Cup berths

Two Oaklawn Park-raced horses are headed to the Breeders’ Cup following “Win and You’re In” victories last weekend at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

Golden Mischief, in the Filly and Mare Sprint division, captured Saturday’s Grade 2 $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes by a head for Brad Cox, among Oaklawn’s top trainers in 2018.

Despite running erratically through the stretch, Blue Prize held on for a three-quarter length victory in Sunday’s Grade 1 $500,000 Spinster Stakes in the Distaff division.

Golden Mischief has raced three times at Oaklawn, winning the

$150,000 Purple Martin Stakes for

3-year-old filly sprinters — via a race-related disqualification of Our Majesty — in 2017 when under the care of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.

After being purchased for $475,000 by famed Juddmonte Farms Inc. at Fasig-Tipton’s Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale, Golden Mischief was transferred to Cox and made her 4-year-old debut in the $125,000 Spring Fever Stakes on March 3 at Oaklawn. Golden Mischief finished ninth as the favorite, but she rebounded to win an April 4 allowance race in 1:08.77 for 6 furlongs, among the fastest times ever for a female at that distance in Hot Springs.

In the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes, Golden Mischief

($11) ran 6 furlongs over a fast track in 1:09.39 under Florent Geroux. Oaklawn-raced Vertical Oak finished third for perennial Oaklawn champions Ricardo Santana Jr. and Asmussen.

Golden Mischief, a daughter of Into Mischief, increased her career earnings to $668,150 with her third consecutive stakes victory. She is 10for-21 overall. The Grade 1 $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint is Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs.

Edgar Morales, Oaklawn’s leading apprentice jockey in 2018, rode two winners on Friday’s opening-day program at Keeneland. Morales’ 17 victories were the highest single-season total for an Oaklawn apprentice since 2010. He was also the leading apprentice this summer at Ellis Park and at the Churchill Downs September meeting.
