Lady Eagles go 2-1 in weekend games

Cutter Morning Star’s varsity girls basketball team defeated Parkers Chapel and Baptist Prep last week during the Battle at the Cove tournament at Magnet Cove, but the Lady Eagles fell, 56-40, in Friday’s home game against England.

The Lady Eagles (2-6) struggled early against Parkers Chapel (3-5) Thursday with both teams putting up just three points in the first quarter, but Cutter Morning Star found its rhythm to take a 15-7 halftime lead. Parkers Chapel pulled within 19-12 going into the final period, but the Lady Eagles dominated the fourth to take the 43-23 win.

Junior point guard Madison Bellomy led Cutter Morning Star with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals, C.J. Burks added eight with six rebounds and 13 blocks, and Haley Scott had six points. Grace Slick led the team in rebounds with 14 along with five points and three blocks. Brecken Knott-Debord and McKenna Knott-Debord both added five points.

The Lady Lions (8-1) took control in the first quarter, 17-14, and they never relented Friday, stretching their 29-21 halftime lead to a 56-40 win.

Bellomy led the team with 14 points, including three from distance. Scott had six points with six boards and four blocks, Kara Kinkaid added five points with eight rebounds and six blocks, and McKenna Knott-Debord shot for five.

Baptist Prep (3-4) trailed, 12-9, after one period on Saturday, but the Lady Eagles pulled within 25-23 by halftime. Cutter Morning Star added 21 points in the third period while allowing just 12 before Baptist Prep put up 16 points in the final eight minutes to set the final.

Kinkaid and Burks led the team with 18 points each, with Kinkaid draining three treys. Bellomy added 10 points, including two 3-pointers.

The Lady Eagles will travel to Haskell to face Harmony Grove (4-5) on Thursday before Friday’s road game against Maumelle Charter (2-4).
