Turrentine featured at Christmas Dance
Sharon Turrentine will be featured as the guest vocalist at the Stardust Big Band Christmas Dance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in the Crystal Ballroom of the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa.
Turrentine has been singing since she was 3 years old. She has had formal voice training, majored in Voice at the University of Houston and went on to study opera through Columbia University in New York City, according to a news release.
Turrentine has sung at shows, at fairs and festivals in Texas, Arkansas and all over the state of Louisiana. She performed on the Dixie Jamboree for many years, and was a featured entertainer on the Ark-La-Tex Roundup in Shreveport, La., for five consecutive years, the release said.
On D-Day, 2014, she had the privilege of opening the ceremony with the national anthem and closing the ceremony with “God Bless America” at the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans. The huge ceremony celebrated the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, and was her 70th birthday, as well. She left there with the feeling that if she never got to sing again, she had done the biggest, most personally satisfying thing she could have done — on her birthday, the release said.
Currently, Turrentine sings regularly in Hot Springs, as well as many other venues. She regularly performs twice a year in the Anthony Chapel at Garvan Woodland Gardens, one at Christmas and one in the spring.
The Stardust Big Band will open the show at 3 p.m. Dec. 16. Admission is $10 and free for students K-12. Only food or beverages from the hotel is allowed in the Crystal Ballroom, except a cake to celebrate with friends for those special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. A cash bar is provided in the lobby, and beverages may be brought to the ballroom. Water is provided at each table.
