Man sen­tenced to 25 years in death of 10-month-old

NEW­PORT — A judge has sen­tenced a north­east Arkansas man to 25 years in prison af­ter he pleaded guilty to se­cond-de­gree mur­der in the death of a 10-month-old girl.

Pros­e­cut­ing At­tor­ney Henry Boyce says 21-year-old Ben­jamin Col­lier of New­port was sen­tenced on Fri­day in the death of an in­fant who was found dead in an apart­ment in New­port on Sept. 10, 2017.

The child was re­ported to be un­re­spon­sive when of­fi­cers were called to the scene.Med­i­cal per­son­nel later found the

child dead.

Boyce says in a state­ment that in­ves­ti­ga­tors de­ter­mined that the child “died as the re­sult of a closed head in­jury.”

Boyce has said ev­i­dence in the case put Col­lier at the scene and im­pli­cated him as be­ing re­spon­si­ble for the child’s in­jury, which caused her death.
