Woman charged with felony battery for alleged attack on husband

- STEVEN MROSS

A Hot Springs woman was arrested on a felony battery charge after allegedly attacking her husband at his home in Diamondhead early Monday.

Delilah Renee Raney, 58, who lists a Grand Isle Drive address, was taken into custody shortly before 1:30 a.m. at her husband’s residence in the 100 block of Diamondhead Drive and charged with second-degree domestic battery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

She was initially held on zero bond and appeared via video Monday afternoon in Garland County District Court where she pleaded

not guilty to the charge. Judge Joe Graham set her bond at $1,500 and issued a court order barring her from contact with the victim. A felony review hearing is set for July 15.

Raney was also ordered to report to her probation officer within 24 hours of her release. She had pleaded no contest on Dec. 13, 2018, to two counts of theft of property involving thefts from Walmart and Sam’s Club and was sentenced to one year in jail with the entire sentence suspended and placed on six months’ probation.

According to the probable cause affidavit, at around 1:17 a.m. Monday, Stephen R. Chapman, 60, drove to the Diamondhead Police Department, 110 Independence Drive, for help because his wife, identified as Raney, had hit him across the head with a glass object.

The affidavit notes both Chapman and Raney were arrested the day before for domestic battery and released.

Diamondhead Police Chief Joel Tyner asked Chapman if he wanted medical attention and he stated yes. Tyner took photos of his injuries and offered to call LifeNet but Chapman reportedly indicated he would drive himself to the hospital.

Tyner responded to Chapman’s residence where the attack allegedly took place and made contact with Raney, who allegedly came to the door with “blood on her face and clothes.” She was taken into custody without incident.

In his petition for the order of protection, Chapman alleges Raney threw a heavy aluminum coffee cup full of wine at him, “splitting my head open” which later required three staples at National Park Medical Center emergency room. He states Raney “abuses Xanax and alcohol and is highly unstable.”

Chapman indicated he wanted no further contact with Raney unless it was to annul their marriage of 11 days.
