Steampunk Showcase set for June 1at library

-

Local artist Phillip Mothershed of Leviathan’s Art will present a Steampunk Art Showcase at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave. Registration is required to attend the free program. “Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that has a historical setting and typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology. Steampunk art is a style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction and fantasy,” the library said in a news release.

An avid fan of steampunk art and design, Mothershed creates clocks and jewelry with refurbished materials. He also welds, paints, draws, and designs original pieces, creating complex steampunk and fantasy-inspired art. Mothershed will present about the history of steampunk and explain his techniques for creating science fiction art pieces. Several of his art pieces will be on display and he will give away a piece to one attendee.

“Mr. Mothershed has hosted an event at the library in the past, and I was surprised by the interest on what I thought was a niche art style,” Paul Kagebein, adult programmer, said in the release. “I now see that is has a big appeal which is gaining interest every day. It’s also great when local artists are willing to educate others about their passions in such a detailed way.”

Mothershed’s art, Leviathan Art, can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and Etsy.
