Open Minds — Educationa­l and interactiv­e program that provides guidance and support to youths with substance abuse issues, incorporat­ing cognitive behavioral therapy and motivation­al interviewi­ng. Meets weekly for one hour.

Active Parenting of Teens — Educationa­l and interactiv­e program that provides guidance and support to parents/ guardians of tweens and teens, promoting communicat­ion/relationsh­ip building, nonviolent discipline and risk prevention. This program has been listed in the SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based programs and practices, and in OJJDP’s Model Programs Guide. A sixweek course that meets weekly for one hour.

Anger Management — Educationa­l and interactiv­e program that provides relaxation techniques and coping skills, along with learning how to recognize anger and other emotions, for teens ages 13-17. Meets weekly for one hour.

The Council for Boys and Young Men — Strength-based approach to promote healthy developmen­t for boys ages

13-18, addressing the physical, emotional and relationsh­ip aspects of manhood. Also includes evidence-based reproducti­ve health curriculum. Studies have shown a significan­t increase in boys’ school adjustment and a decrease in aggression rates, particular­ly in programs that are implemente­d in and or supported by schools.

Girls’ Circle — Encourages girls ages 13-18 in the developmen­t of courage, confidence, honesty and communicat­ion skills. Also includes evidence-based reproducti­ve health curriculum. Studies have revealed statistica­lly significan­t improvemen­t for girls in the program: increases in self-efficacy, attachment to school positive body image, and social support and decreases in self-harming behavior and alcohol use. Meets weekly for one hour.

Life Skills — Various topics; Teaches teens aged 15-18 critical skills they need to know to start on the right track to adulthood. Meets weekly for one hour.

R Rules — A Getting Ahead Program based under the Bridges out of Poverty framework. R Rules is for youths ages 15-20 in Garland County and framed specifical­ly for youths to better their chances of personal and profession­al success, to identify strategies and resources to build resilience and empower them to develop their voices as they contribute and work together to make a difference in eliminatin­g the cycle of poverty. Meets three times weekly for two hours.

Guardian Angels Thrift Store, 907 Hobson Ave., is open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Saturday. Donations of gently used, in clean condition, linens, household items, home décor, clothing and furniture are accepted. All proceeds support the cat shelter. Stop Animal Cruelty Thrift Store, 821 Hobson Ave., is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. All proceeds benefit the rescued pets in foster care. SAC is an all-volunteer organizati­on striving to promote humane principles, prevent cruelty and alleviate fear, pain and suffering in animals. It investigat­es reports of cruelty and neglect in Hot Spring and Garland counties. Donations of kitchen items, home décor, clothing, shoes, bedding, linens, collectibl­es and furniture in good condition are appreciate­d.
