Earth Angel

The Clean, Attractive Property Service, or C.A.P.S., is provided by the Solid Waste Department to city residents who wish to dispose of large bulky items such as couches, mattresses, furniture, brush and appliances including washers and dryers, refrigerators, freezers and water heaters. Materials that are bagged or boxed will not be accepted with this service.

Residents may have two free collections per year, each weighing up to one ton. For each additional collection thereafter, there will be a charge of $20.

Items scheduled for pickup must be placed curbside by 6 a.m. There needs at least 20 feet of overhead clearance for safe operation of the equipment.

Pickup days are:

• Monday and Thursday — Brush. Cannot be mixed with trash, wood, paper, cans, bottles or wire.

C.A.P.S. picks up brush and grounds it to be recycled into compost. Brush must be cut 6 feet in length or shorter, and cannot be larger than 24 inches in diameter.

• Tuesday and Friday — Miscellaneous. Cannot be mixed with household garbage, plastic bags, cardboard, paint, batteries or tires.

C.A.P.S. picks up miscellaneous items such as couches, mattresses, furniture, wood and building materials.

• Wednesday — Metal. Cannot be placed under low power lines or tree limbs. Remove old food from refrigerators and freezers.

C.A.P.S. picks up items including dishwashers, washers, dryers, refrigerators, water heaters and metal items only.

Last week, the Earth Angels of Hot Springs recycled:

• 175 pounds — Aluminum cans.

• 45,340 pounds — Commercial cardboard.

• 985 pounds — Corrugated cardboard.

• 1,213 pounds — Newspaper.

• 687 pounds — Plastic No. 1 and No. 2.

• 128,140 pounds — Yard waste and C.A.P.S.

Last week, a total of 88.27 tons of recyclable materials were kept out of the landfill.
