LH students to receive meals this summer
The Lake Hamilton School District will still be able to provide weekly bulk meals to students after the final day of school on Friday.
School employees have been volunteering each week to deliver bulk meals to homes, which will continue through the end of the school year. Beginning May 26, the school district will transition to a bulk meal pick
up at the high school cafeteria, according to Brian Bridges, communications and public relations coordinator.
Bridges said that the district released a bulk meal delivery request form where households in the district were able to register any child 18 and younger in their household to receive free bulk breakfast and lunch meal delivery to their home once a week.
“Once registrations were received, Jeff Britt, LHSD assistant superintendent, went through the submissions and coordinated delivery days based on the geographic locations in the district,” he said. “We’ve been delivering over 21,000 meals per week since we began bulk meal delivery.”
Bridges said that Chartwells K-12, the district’s food service management company, and the school district have been working together to provide bulk meals for students that include frozen entrees, frozen breakfast items, frozen vegetables, as well as fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fruit juice, and milk, along with cooking instructions.
“Each registered household receives a bulk meal delivery once per week on their designated day that includes five breakfast and five lunches per child that is under 18 years of age,” he said.
Weekly bulk meals for each student under the age of 18 may be picked up at the high school cafeteria from May 26 to June 26 for those that preregister at this link https://lhsd.info/SummerBulkMeals, according to the Lake Hamilton School website.
“Registration for the summer bulk meal pickups will remain open until the end of the day on Wednesday, May 20. Once registrations have been received, the district will assign pick up days for registered families,” it said.
The bulk meal pick up will include five breakfasts and five lunches for each child in the household aged 18 and younger.
The pickup day information will be released on the school website and social media channels when it is available. Call 767-8315 for more information.
“We are able to provide these meals to children 18 years and younger free of charge through the U.S. Department of Agriculture school breakfast program and national school lunch program,” he said. “Chartwells K-12 handles the food preparation and packaging. Once prepared and packaged, school district volunteers deliver the bulk meals.”
Bridges said that it is a great feeling knowing that the district can assist families during this challenging time by providing bulk meals for their children 18 and younger. Even though school is not being held on-campus right now, the district understands that the basic needs of students must be met before they are able to focus on learning.
“We would like to thank all of our Chartwells K-12 food service employees and district volunteers who have helped in the bulk meal delivery. The Lake Hamilton community is special and always steps up to take care of one another in times of need,” he said.
