A Hot Springs man was arrested on a felony assault charge Sunday morning after allegedly threatening his wife and her friend at gunpoint during a dispute over damages to a vehicle.

Raymond Lindell Self, 32, who lists a Vantage Street address, was taken into custody shortly before 8:30 a.m. and charged with aggravated assault on a family or household member, punishable by up to six years in prison.

Self was held overnight in lieu of $2,500 bond and was set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly before 7:30 a.m., Hot Springs police responded to the 200 block of Autumn Street regarding an assault and spoke to a woman and her friend who stated they had been threatened with a gun

by the woman’s husband, identified as Self, in the parking lot at 1020 E. Grand Ave. while they were working on a vehicle.

The wife stated Self was angry with her because she slashed two of the tires on the car, which belongs to Self’s mother, the night before. She said they argued and then Self pulled a pistol from his left pant leg and pointed it at them.

She said she and her friend left the area “out of fear for their lives.” Officers responded to 1020 E. Grand and found the vehicle, but Self was not on the scene, so they left. About 15 minutes later, officers went back to the scene and found Self standing in the parking lot near the vehicle.

They approached him and told him he was under arrest for an alleged assault but did not mention a gun, the affidavit states. Self allegedly told officers he “did not have a gun on him” and that his wallet fell down his pants leg and that was what he grabbed earlier.

Self was taken to the jail where he was read his rights and before any questions were asked, Self reportedly stated he had walked to a gas station after his wife and her friend left and then back to the scene. He allegedly stated, “Where would I have hid a gun with all those cars driving by?”

The affidavit notes officers never told Self they thought he had hidden a gun or that a gun was even involved in the incident. “Self gave this information unprovoked by officers,” it states.
