God and government
Dear editor:
An issue arose here whether God appointed D. Trump to lead this nation. I’d like to cite a few facts testifying to God’s involvement. The Bible is believed by most Christians to be God’s word to man. The book of Romans, Chapter 13, is an excellent explanation of man’s responsibility to government, and vice versa. The principles of that chapter have been in effect since from Genesis until current events, and will never pass away. Though most historic kingdoms and empires have disbanded, others are building (China?) to some degree. The best is the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth through Jesus Christ.
The Declaration of Independence from England opened on an establishment of a relation of God and men desiring freedom. Of the 56 signers of the U.S. Constitution, all were Christians of various persuasions.
John Adams said “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of an other.” A sobering statement! The typical message of that is if America sides with immorality and abandons religion, America will no longer deserve the mighty wisdom of the Constitution established by God-fearing men. We would then deserve a government of the people, not of and by the people as we currently enjoy. Romans
Chapter 13 describes some hints as to what could happen individually and collectively. America, and any other nation, will have the form of government deserved.
God named the ancient conqueror Cyrus, king of Persia, the liberator of Israel hundreds of years before he was born. God is on record as managing governments in many unlikely manners. Choosing Trump by a slight unexpected margin of popular votes, a typical “carnal” American man no more or less carnal than the other candidate, we see the working of God to the forgiveness of sins and transformation of “stinking thinking” in any who are in Christ. It’s a work of God available for any who are in Christ. He serves as a warning not to judge, but that we all should keep praying for our leaders.” America will be great because she is good.” (unknown author). That is an old saying that needs to remain true.
