U.S.D. 1812 learns men’s winter clothing needed at SFH
The Arkansas Society United States Daughters of 1812 recently learned from St. Francis House of the need for men’s winter clothing.
Due to the pandemic, St. Francis House has not received donated men’s clothing and in anticipation of winter, has released a plea for new or gently worn men’s coats, jackets, sweaters, flannel shirts, sweats and denim jeans, U.S.D. 1812 said in a news release.
St. Francis provides transitional housing for homeless veterans having difficulties reentering society because of post-traumatic stress syndrome or substance abuse or other problems. The program provides a therapeutic setting, in
cluding the services of counseling, transitional housing, meals and laundry.
“Able veterans are required to seek full-time employment. Those unable to work are assisted with securing other types of income, such as VA pension or disability. All residents are required to save 75% of their income to secure permanent housing. Once their savings are sufficient, they are assisted in finding housing,” the release said.
In addition to single men and women in residence, the facility can also accommodate two families, each family housed in one large room.
“Veteran homelessness is a
major problem in modern- day America. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, there are around 49,933 homeless veterans on any given night. While veterans make up just 2% of the American population, they make up 11% of the adult homeless population,” the release said.
“With the invaluable assistance from the community, U.S.D. 1812 has been able to deliver nearly
400 men’s coats over the last four years. Coats are delivered to SFH as well as the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare Volunteer Service in North Little Rock,” it said.
