- STEVEN MROSS

An employee of a local cab company was arrested Friday night on multiple felony charges after allegedly embezzling over $26,000 from the company from June to September this year.

Alexakis Caroll Conner, 28, who lists a Kentucky Street address, was taken into custody shortly before 9 p.m. and charged with 45 counts of second- degree forgery, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and one count of theft of property over $25,000, punishable by up to 20 years.

Conner, who lists no prior criminal history, was later released on a $55,000 bond and is set to appear on Dec. 8 in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the owner of Hot Springs Taxi Inc., 901 Hobson Ave., filed a report with Hot Springs police alleging a theft of funds from the business and the forgery of numerous business checks.

He said he discovered the forged checks were all written to one employee, identified as Conner, who did not have authorization. He noted Conner was only in charge of paying bills, but she had access to his signature stamp.

He said she did not have the authority to write checks to herself, but each of the checks was written to her and signed using his signature stamp. The 45 forged checks ranged from the highest at $2,000 to the lowest at $100 for a total of $26,324.

The first was written on June 15 for $1,122 and the last was written on Sept. 14 for $800. The owner provided documentation of all the checks and confirmed they were all written without his knowledge or consent.

A warrant was issued for Conner’s arrest and on Friday, shortly before 9 p.m., a caller told police Conner was seen standing in the parking lot of Hot Springs Taxi. Officers responded and took her into custody without incident.
