Traffic stop leads to two arrests Monday on felony drug charges

- STEVEN MROSS

A felon on parole and a local woman were arrested on multiple felony charges involving drugs and a gun following a traffic stop early Monday.

Jeffery Scott Holthusen, 42, and Hannah Elizabeth Bailey, 40, who both list the same Rockdale Road address, were taken into custody shortly before 12:30 a.m. by Garland County sheriff’s deputies in the 3000 block of Albert Pike Road.

Holthusen was charged with simultaneous possession of drugs and a firearm, punishable by up to life in prison, possession of a firearm by certain persons, punishable by up to 20 years, possession of a controlled substance, meth, punishable by up to 10 years, and possession of drug paraphernalia, punishable by up to six years.

Bailey was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance involving various pills found, with two counts punishable by up to 10 years in prison and one misdemeanor count, one count of possession of a controlled substance, meth, and three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, each punishable by up to six years.

Holthusen, who was also cited for having fictitious tags, driving on a suspended license and driving left of center, was being held on zero bond while Bailey was being held on $ 18,000 bond. They were both set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavits, shortly after midnight, Deputies Kevin Hampton and Shane Tatum were getting fuel at the Valero station, 2616 Albert Pike Road, when Tatum spotted a vehicle driving by that matched one suspected in multiple break-ins.

The two deputies followed the vehicle, a white Ford Explorer, and a computer check showed the license plate returned to a red Dodge Journey. Hampton also noted the vehicle crossed the centerline once just prior to Bull Bayou Road, so he pulled the vehicle over and made contact with the driver, identified as Holthusen, while Tatum made contact with the passenger, identified as Bailey.

A computer check on Holthusen showed he was a felon on active supervision with a search waiver on file and also showed he was an absconder, so he was asked to step out so the vehicle could be searched. When asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, Holthusen reportedly said, “You might find something in that camo bag.”

The bag, located in the center console, allegedly contained a loaded .45-caliber pistol and a red bag labeled “Dime Bags,” which contained a glass smoking pipe and 2.3 grams of meth. After being read his rights and questioned, Holthusen reportedly admitted the bag belonged to him.

The affidavit notes Holthusen was convicted in Garland County Circuit Court in 2017 for possession of a controlled substance, three counts of breaking or entering, theft of property over $25,000 and theft by receiving over $1,000.

At the time of the traffic stop. Tatum had reportedly noticed Bailey reaching down to the floorboard area so she was also asked to step out and then Tatum found a gray and black case on the passenger side floorboard under her purse.

The case was reportedly found to contain 1.4 gram of meth, a glass pipe and two straws. Inside her purse, he reportedly found a zippered case containing 27 Adderall pills, seven Xanax pills and 10 hydrocodone pills, and Bailey allegedly admitted she did not have a prescription for the pills.
