Lakeside aims to improve, earn first win

After a tough 48-14 loss to cross-county rival Lake Hamilton, Lakeside looks to bounce back at home when the Rams host Sheridan Friday night.

Sheridan (0-1) started the season with a 41-0 loss to White Hall, but Lakeside head coach Jared McBride noted the experience the Yellowjackets have returning.

“They have a good group of seniors that are returning that have some experience,” McBride said. “Quarterback is back, and we’re going to have to play a complete game on Friday to get our win.”

With last week’s game in the rearview mirror, the Rams (0-1) can look forward to the matchup against the Yellowjackets.

“Our kids are excited about an opportunity to play this week versus Sheridan, and they’ve had a really good week of practice,” McBride said.

In the game at Lake Hamilton, senior quarterback Jordan Mills went 9 for 19 for 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

On the ground, the running game struggled to make progress at Wolf Stadium. Sophomore running back Braylen Russell gained nine yards on four carries, while senior Chance Cross picked up two yards on two rushes.

The Rams finally got going on the ground when both teams put in their second squads, and sophomore running back Zane Garrett carried the ball eight times for 48 yards.

Despite making some progress late in the game with players like Garrett, there was not much for Lakeside to take from the matchup. After the game at Lake Hamilton, McBride said some players would be moved around and different players would get on the field.

In the lead up to Sheridan, McBride did not comment on whether any changes will be made for the contest against the Yellowjackets.

Instead, McBride was consistent and short with repeated answers about Friday’s matchup.

“Again, our team has had a great week of practice, and they’ll be ready to play on Friday,” McBride said.

Last year, Lakeside took a 35-7 win at Sheridan.

Kick off from Chick Austin Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
