CD17 chapter supports Garland County History
The Col. John Washington Chapter, Colonial Dames 17th Century, heard a presentation from author Mike Blythe on his book “Hot Springs: Then and Now,” published by the Garland County Historical Society, at its September meeting at Hot Springs Country Club.
“In support of GCHS and inspired by the presentation, attendees purchased nine autographed books with 100% of the proceeds going to support the work of GCHS. Some of the attendees had previously purchased the book. Historical preservation is one of CD17 goals,” a news release said.
Since 1960, the GCHS has collected, preserved, and educated the public about the history of Garland County. With approximately 40,000 photographs and other items in their searchable database, numerous newspapers, manuscripts, maps, books, and other materials, GCHS has “one of Arkansas’ most outstanding local history collections.” Published annually is The Record, as well as books illuminating the fascinating past of Hot Springs and Garland County. Programs are given to school, civic, and other groups and GCHS holds special events to promote interest in local history.
GCHS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and depends on grants, volunteers, donations and proceeds from items sold to maintain the current collection and the acquisition of additional historical items.
Just a few of the books offered for sale to support the society are “Country Doctors of Arkansas,” “The Mob at the Spa: Organized Crime and Its Fascination with Hot Springs, Arkansas,” “Dangerous Visitors: The Lawless Era,” “Hot Springs Gunsmoke,” “Boiling Out at the Springs: A History of Major League Baseball Spring Training at Hot Springs, Arkansas.”
GCHS, 328 Quapaw Ave., is open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. weekdays. More information about the services offered can be found at http://www.garlandcountyhistoricalsociety.com.
