NSDAR, UDC assemble gifts for veterans

-

Members of the Hot Springs of Arkansas Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and the Hot Springs Chapter 80 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy joined together for a special Christmas gift wrapping party at Smokin’ In Style.

The ladies brought needed items for the veterans at Fort Roots in North Little Rock and assembled 65 gifts in their honor. DAV Chapter 5 members were on hand to receive the gifts for delivery to Fort Roots.

“It is humbling to witness the reactions by our veterans when they receive a gift of any kind,” a news release said.

“The Hot Springs of Arkansa Chapter and the Hot Springs Chapter 80 UDC ladies enjoyed this annual project,” it said.

They also make monthly deliveries of cookies, candies, and snacks for the patients at the VA Clinic on Sawtooth Oak here in Hot Springs. In honor of Veterans Day, they placed almost 300 American flags on veterans’ graves at Morning Star Cemetery. Some of the members sew pillows for the CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs and National Park Medical Center Women’s Centers for breast cancer patients as well as crochet mats and pillows from plastic shopping bags for the homeless. Other members send cards and make benevolent contributions to local charities.

This January, they will be honoring a senior from four high schools who “received the prestigious honor of being their campus’ DAR Good Citizen.” The UDC members also bestow military service awards to those qualifying veterans.
