A one-day Household Hazardous Waste Collection event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the Garland County Fairground­s, 4831 Malvern Road.

Household hazardous wastes are unused or leftover household products containing chemicals that are toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive. These products, such as paints, cleaners, oils and pesticides, can contain hazardous waste and should not be disposed of in household trash; poured down sinks, toilets or storm drains; or just dumped on the ground. Left stored improperly at home, they can be a hazard to children and cause fumes or fires.

Last week, the Earth Angels of Hot Springs recycled:

257 pounds — Aluminum cans.

91,420 pounds — Commercial corrugated cardboard.

172 pounds — Newspaper.

968 pounds — Plastic grades No. 1 and No. 2.

1,520 pounds — Residentia­l corrugated cardboard.

73,540 pounds — Yard waste and C.A.P.S. Last week, a total 73.72 of tons of recyclable materials were kept out of the landfill. Collection schedule
