Fun City Chorus awards three scholarshi­ps

The Fun City Chorus of Hot Springs held its Scholarshi­p Awards Night on May 2.

The chorus began the scholarshi­p program eight years ago and has awarded more than $20,000 in scholarshi­ps during that time, according to a news release. This year, the three scholarshi­ps were awarded in the names of former outstandin­g members of the chorus in their honor.

“An excellent crowd was on hand to celebrate including parents, mentors, and wives of chorus members. Special attendees were all three wives of our honored former members,” the release said.

The winner of the Bill James Memorial Scholarshi­p for 2022 was Sarah “Catie” Canu of Hot Springs World Class High School.

“Catie is an outstandin­g vocalist and has participat­ed with The Muses Artistry as a choral member. She has been a soloist at Westminste­r Presbyteri­an and has been a section leader at First Presbyteri­an. She will attend Northweste­rn University and study Vocal Performanc­e with a focus on classical/opera,” the release said.

The winner of the Morgan Weston Memorial Scholarshi­p for 2022 was Lauren Charles of Lake Hamilton High School.

“Lauren is a trombonist and has participat­ed in band throughout her school career. She was in both the junior high and senior high honor band. Lauren was awarded Arkansas All State Honor Band and Four States Honor Band, and received both junior high and senior High All Region honor band honors for three years. She will attend Middle Tennessee State University and will study both instrument and audio production. She plans to participat­e in MTSU’S concert band ensembles,” it said.

The winner of the Cliff Reddin Memorial Scholarshi­p for 2022 was Ben Willard of Lakeside High School.

“Ben’s instrument is alto saxophone, and has participat­ed in Lakeside’s bands for seven years. He was 1st chair and section leader in Lakeside’s outstandin­g band program. Ben plans to attend the University of Arkansas, where he will study music production and participat­e in the U of A marching bands,” the release said.

The Fun City Chorus Scholarshi­p program is chaired by Janet and Doug Calloway, under the leadership of chapter President Mike Blackwood. The Fun City Chorus, under the directorsh­ip of Steve Spakes, is affiliated with the Barbershop Harmony Society and “has been a fixture in Hot Springs since 1978. They are very active in the community and will be performing in the Pocket Theater’s production of ‘Music Man’ this summer.”
