GLENWOOD — Daniel Craig “Papa” Afeld, age 75, of Glenwood went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 14, 2022 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.
He was born Nov. 2, 1946, at St. Anne’s Hospital in Chicago, Ill., the son of Dan and Gwen Afeld. He was married to Nancy Afeld, his high school sweetheart, on Oct. 31, 1964, for nearly 58 years. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Craig was raised in a military home and traveled to numerous places around the globe during his father’s Army career, always reminiscing and telling stories of all his many adventures. He retired after 37 years in the auto industry.
Craig was the amusement of his entire family, always telling jokes, laughing, loving life and people. He loved telling stories and if you got distracted, he would be sure to shake your shirt sleeve to draw your attention. He never met a stranger, loved meeting new people and going to new places and once he met you, he remembered you for life.
His hobbies included his farm, riding horses and following old tractor and car shows, whether television, internet or in person. He loved spending time with immediate and extended family and was always up for an adventure, whether traveling to Illinois, across country, just staying close to home helping any one of his four children with all their projects or going to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in whatever activities they were involved in. He was full of life, laughter and love, and never knew what the word stranger meant.
Nanny and Papa raised four children to love and praise the Lord, love their families, and respect and love their country. They counted each day as a blessing from God and never took any of those blessings for granted. Their love and devotion have spanned 58 years and has been passed on to three generations. His infectious storytelling, joking, love of life and laughter will be missed by not only his family and friends, but countless coworkers and anyone he met.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Afeld of Glenwood; his children, Scott (Chris) of Hot Springs, Cindy (Keith) of Bonnerdale, Joe (Stephanie) of Glenwood and Tanya (Shearidon) of Russellville; 10 grandchildren, Anastasia (Max), Amy, Travis, Emily (Jason), Lindsey, Megan (Ryan), Joey, Stormie (Braison), Skylar and Alyssa; and eight great-grandchildren, Remi Rose, Maverick, Bradlyn, Kylie Jo, Cooper, Piper, Remington and Kayce; two brothers, Tim (Cindy) Afeld of Owasso Okla., Dennis Afeld of Springfield Ill.; and one sister, Debbie (David) Emberson of Moore, Okla.; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of wonderful friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in the Smith Family Funeral Home chapel, Glenwood, with Pastor David Emberson officiating.
Interment will be in Mount Tabor Cemetery, Glenwood.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today, Sept. 16, 2022, in the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Glenwood.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Divers and staff, Elite Hospice, special neighbors on Baker Road and his many friends over the years in the car business.
