Schmitt swims to success
LITTLE ROCK — Lake Hamilton seventh grade swimmer Aubrey Schmitt set personal bests while competing at the USA-2023 Valentine Invitational swim meet with the Central Arkansas Racers.
Schmitt set personal bests in the 50-yard freestyle (25.83) , 50-yard butterfly (27.97), 100-yard individual medley (1:03.94) and 100-yard backstroke (1:04.76).
Schmitt captured first place while setting those personal bests in the open freestyle event, open butterfly event and open individual medley event. She also won the open 100-yard butterfly.
She placed second in the open backstroke event. Open events are open to all ages and are not limited to a certain age group.
LH DEFEATS RIVAL
PEARCY — The Lake Hamilton boys basketball team picked up a 75-54 rivalry win over Lakeside.
Zac Pennington led the Wolves with 24 points on eight 3-pointers, and he added five rebounds. Ty Robinson notched 17 points and five steals, and LaBraun Christon tallied 11 points, eight assists and five steals.
Charter Harris totaled seven points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Easton Hurley contributed seven points and five steals. Cooper Kindt finished with six points.
WOLVES WIN SWIM AND DIVE CONFERENCE TITLE
BRYANT — The Lake Hamilton boys swim and dive team captured the Class 5A-South conference championship, and the Lady Wolves finished fourth.
Haddie Heard won Lake Hamilton’s first girls conference dive title in 1-meter diving, scoring 271.35 as a freshman.
In the boys event, Coby Qualls captured his second title in two years with a score of 231.85.
Aidan Qualls, Coby Qualls, Colten Barentine and Hunter Maron won the boys 200 medley relay with a personal best time of 1:51.87.
Peyton Speas finished first in the boys 200 freestyle with a personal best of 2:04.37.
Haylie Miller set a personal best of 2:48.70 with a second-place finish in the girls 200 individual medley.
In the boys 50 freestyle, Hunter Maron finished first and set a personal best time of 23.92. Maron also captured the boys 100 freestyle with a time of 56.72.
Aidan Qualls and Speas finished first and second respectively in the boys 500 freestyle. Aidan Qualls set a personal best of 5:15.88.
Miller, Jenna Baxter, Abigail Crow and Sophia Costa finished second in the girls 200 freestyle relay with a personal best time of 2:12.20.
Speas, Barentine, Coby Qualls and Elijah Johnston won the boys 200 freestyle relay with a personal best time of 1:46.70.
Aidan Qualls captured the title in the boys 100 backstroke with a personal best tally of 58.79.
Aidan Qualls, Johnston, Barentine and Maron won the boys 400 freestyle relay with a personal best time of 3:53.07.
Coby Qualls, Aidan Qualls, Barentine, Maron, Speas, Johnston, Heard, Miller, Baxter, Costa and Crow all picked up 5A-South All-Conference honors.
FOUNTAIN LAKE SPLITS CONTESTS
FOUNTAIN LAKE — The Fountain Lake boys basketball team defeated Clarksville 59-41 to improve to 11-4 in the Class 4A-4.
The Cobras jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first quarter and took a 22-18 edge into halftime. Fountain Lake then distanced itself from Clarksville, leading 45-29 after three quarters.
Colby Lambert led the Cobras with 15 points, and Evan East tallied 14. Dillon Dettmering and Wyatt Clem scored eight points apiece.
Before beating Clarksville, Fountain Lake fell to conference-leading Dardanelle 67-41.
Dardanelle jumped out to a 13-11 lead after one quarter and led by six points at halftime. The Sand Lizards extended their lead to 51-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
Lambert led Fountain Lake with 17 points, and East finished with 12.
JUNIOR RAMS FALL TO CENTRAL
The Lakeside junior high basketball team lost 36-32 to Little Rock Central.
Beau Brock led the junior Rams with 10 points, and Caleb Rogers scored eight. Quardarius Jackson tallied seven points, and Wally Wolcott finished with four points. Lakeside fell to 14-6 with the loss.
Bethel defeated the eighth grade
Lakeside team 28-20. Blake Vincent led Lakeside with seven points, and Peter Ohman scored four. Lakeside dropped to 12-2 with the loss.
The seventh grade Lakeside team beat Bethel 51-19 to improve to 13-2 on the year. Hudson Choate led the way with 14 points. Wyatt McBride and Axl Janske scored nine points each.
GAC LISTS WEEKLY SOFTBALL AWARDS
RUSSELLVILLE — The Great American Conference announced Southern Arkansas’ Alyssa Miller as the league’s softball player of the week and Arkansas Tech’s Bailey Buffington as co-pitcher of the week with Oklahoma Baptist’s Kayleigh Jones.
Miller went 11-for-14 as the Muleriders went 5-0 at the Mardi Gras Invitational. She tallied two three-hit games and hit an inside-the-park home run.
Buffington did not allow an earned run across 21.2 innings of work. She notched complete-game shutouts against Texas A&M International and Oklahoma Christian.
Jones tallied three wins at the Mardi Gras Invitational and broke the school record for career strikeouts.
GAC ANNOUNCES BASEBALL AWARDS
RUSSELLVILLE — The GAC listed Arkansas-Monticello’s Cade Cancilla as the conference’s baseball player of the week and Arkansas Tech’s Gerald Pintarich as co-pitcher of the week with Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Cole Canuteson.
Cancilla hit .556 in a three-game sweep of Mississippi College. He notched a grand slam in the ninth inning of game one.
Pintarich picked up the win in relief and tallied nine strikeouts across four innings against Chico State.
Canuteson limited Northeastern State to two singles over five innings of scoreless work. He struck out nine batters.
HSU TENNIS PLAYER WINS AWARD
RUSSELLVILLE — Henderson State’s Mulan Kamoe won the GAC’s women’s tennis player of the week award.
Kamoe won matches in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles against Delta State. In singles, she lost the first set 4-6 but battled back to win 6-2, 10-7.
