GPS tracker leads to woman’s arrest for alleged theft of perfume

- STEVEN MROSS

One of three suspects who allegedly stole over $3,000 worth of perfumes and cologne from a local cosmetics store in December was located in Little Rock after being tracked by GPS and extradited to Hot Springs Tuesday night.

Jewellali Larrie Young, 26, who lists a Little Rock address, was taken into custody at the Hot Springs Police Department shortly after 7:30 p.m. and booked into the detention center around 10:45 p.m. on a felony warrant for theft of property, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear.

Young was later released on a $4,500 bond and is set to appear on March 14 in Garland County District Court.

According to court records, she was convicted in Phillips County in 2018 of forgery and sentenced to five years’ probation. She was arrested on Nov. 1, 2022, in Pulaski County on felony counts of possession of firearms by certain persons, theft by receiving, felony fleeing and reckless driving with a hearing set for May 1. She was arrested again in Little Rock on Tuesday on a felony charge of theft of property and the warrant from Hot Springs was served on her.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Dec. 1, shortly after 11 a.m., employees of Ulta Beauty, 231 Cornerstone Blvd., reported a theft of multiple bottles of perfume and cologne by three Black females who had entered the store shortly before 11 a.m.

All three were reportedly carrying dark totes and walked over to the men’s fragrance section and began grabbing fragrances off the shelves and concealing them in their totes.

The incident lasted about two minutes and then the three females exited the store, walking past all points of sale, without paying for the merchandise. The store manager noted they got into a gray Chevrolet Malibu and drove away, last seen headed north on Central Avenue.

It was noted 33 various fragrances, with a total value of $3,176, were taken along with a 3SI security tracker, valued at $2,000, that was hidden inside one of the boxes. The total loss to the store was $5,176.

The GPS tracker was pinged leaving Hot Springs and going into Little Rock. The information was relayed to Little Rock police who later located the vehicle on Baseline Road in Little Rock occupied by three Black females who matched the descriptions of the ones in the store, including Young.

The three suspects were later released, but the vehicle was held for Hot Springs police to collect. It was brought back to Hot Springs and a search warrant was obtained. All the merchandise and the tracker were reportedly recovered from inside.

Upon comparing the store’s security video footage with the suspects detained, HSPD Detective Matthew Cheatham was reportedly able to positively identify them as the actors in the theft and warrants were issued.
