Gene Osborne Garland, 87, of Hot Springs National Park, Ark., passed away March 7, 2023.

He was born May 19, 1935, in Ruston, La., to the late John Osborne (J.O.) Garland and Annie Belle Mallory Garland.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jacquie Runyan Garland; sons, Jim Garland (Marty), of Conway, Joel Garland (Jean), of Lillie, La., and Jeff Garland (Kim), of Colliervil­le, Tenn.; grandchild­ren, Joshua Garland, Holly (Aaron) Nicholson, Logan (Morgan) Garland, Clark (Megan) Garland, Emily (Brad) Turner, Katie (Marlon) Cook, Anna Garland, Reagan Garland and Miles Garland; nine great-grandchild­ren, three great-great-grandchild­ren; and his brother, Robert G. Garland (Barbara) of Springhill, La.

Gene was a native of Haynesvill­e, La., and graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a forestry degree. He spent his working career with Internatio­nal Paper Company and Cabe Land Company. He enjoyed his retirement years fishing on Lake Hamilton, cultivatin­g gardens, flowers, trees or anything that could be grown. A lifelong outdoorsma­n and conservati­onist, he especially enjoyed taking his sons, grandchild­ren, nieces, nephews, cousins or acquaintan­ces fishing and was known for whistling while he worked.

He was a member of Oaklawn United Methodist Church.

No formal services are planned at this time, although a gathering of family and friends will be held soon.
