Born in Kirby, Ark., on June 5, 1941, to Deleon and Maudie Foshee (who preceded him in death), Darwin grew up in Mountain Pine, Ark., and graduated high school from there. He attended college at

Ouachita Baptist University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, and served in the Arkansas National Guard. Later he earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Arkansas.

Darwin started out his career as a basketball coach in Mountain Pine, then went to Mount Ida as the boy’s basketball coach. Darwin became an elementary school principal and worked at several schools in the area — Mount Ida, Mountain Pine and Fountain Lake — before retiring. He coached pee-wee basketball on the weekends and was one of the best high school basketball referees in the area. In summers, while at Mount Ida, he worked as a Corps of Engineers park ranger.

Darwin had a way of relating to almost everybody. Students, basketball players, teachers and other educators regarded him as tough, but fair, with an unerring sense of what was best for the students and school. He was a diehard Razorbacks basketball and football fan and a huge St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He always entertained people with stories and anecdotes of growing up and other adventures. Darwin enjoyed gardening and fixing up his ‘55 Chevy. He never met a banana or strawberry he didn’t like!

His greatest joy and focus throughout his life was his immediate and extended family, no matter what family that was. Darwin enjoyed Milholen monthly get-togethers and Sunday lunches at his parent’s house in Mountain Pine. He looked forward to having family over for cookouts on the Fourth of July and Labor Day. In his later years, Darwin particularly enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren swim and play in the pool. He loved traveling down for Thanksgiving and Christmas with the Bolt family. Darwin liked to travel with his family, taking them throughout most of the continental U.S.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jackie Kaye Milholen Foshee, and his older sister, Marie Stewart.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, June Foshee; his children, Dan (Micah), Dave (Alissa), Jennifer and Janette; grandchildren, Skylor, Serenity (Andrew), Audrey, Parker, Eliya and Journee; great-grandchildren, Lawson, Lennox and Saige; his brotherin-law, Royce Stewart; brother, George Foshee (Kaye); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and the many, many students he positively affected during his career. His legacy is best summed up by a quote from one of his former students and players, “You had such a ‘huge’ impact on ‘so’ many of us through the years, not only as our Coach, but in life.”

Please join us in celebrating Darwin’s life on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home on Section Line Road in Hot Springs, Ark.
