Westerman and Trump

-

Dear editor:

A recent letter writer wondered how our congressman, Bruce Westerman, could continue to show loyalty to Donald Trump. A man facing felony charges in four jurisdictions. A man found civilly liable of sexual assault. A man who claims to be a business genius, but has declared bankruptcy on multiple occasions. A man who has said it’s OK to “just grab ‘em” in reference to women’s bodies.

I’m speculating here, but I doubt Westerman likes or respects Trump. I suspect a large number of Republicans in Washington feel the same way, outside of a few grovelers like Elise Stefanik and worshippers like Marjorie Taylor Greene. And yet, the fact is that the vast majority of the party has proven spineless, as the previous letter writer pointed out, and hitched their wagon to the Trump train.

Why would Westerman and other Republicans support a man who has caused nothing but division and strife in our country? Who absconded with classified documents after leaving office? There’s only one logical conclusion — their desire for reelection outweighs their morals, principles, and wish to serve their country, not their party. They are so frightened to speak out against Trump for fear of losing the votes of the delusional MAGA base that they sit in silent cowardice.

The sad part of it is Westerman doesn’t have to take this position. The Democratic Party in Arkansas is so weak he’s virtually assured reelection. And yet he continues to bend the knee to the Party of Donald. Remember this when you vote in November: Donald Trump called veterans, people who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, “suckers.”
