Bras For A Cause draws applause
Annual event raises money for breast cancer patients
Bras For A Cause got lots of applause last weekend as organizers celebrated their first sold-out event in 12 years.
The Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley held its 12th annual Bras For A Cause fundraising event Sunday at the Bridgeport Clubhouse in Valencia with almost double the number of attendees over last year’s event.
Every year the group invites people to bid on stylist bras, buy raffle tickets for gift baskets, and have fun raising money for a worthwhile cause.
“This is the first year we have sold out,” the event’s co-chairwoman, Suzanne Stone, said of the event.
Maybe it was a sit-down dinner, perhaps the elaborate nude-figure ice sculpture, or maybe just the constantly evolving appreciation of a good cause — supporting the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center and the Circle of Hope. Both agencies help breast cancer survivors.
“This is the first year we’ve had a sit-down meal,” Stone said.
Denise Palcencio, the event’s other co-chairwoman, came up with this year’s “Candyland” theme.
“Our slogan this year is: Your support is sweet,” Palcencio said.
The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center provides free mammograms to local women in need. The Circle of Hope helps local breast cancer patients and their families with medical bills, counseling, fee negotiations with doctors and medical services, such as second-opinion examinations.
“We really made this a team effort,” Stone said.
One of those who joined the team this year was Peter DeGrandis, representing the company providing the ice sculpture, Arctic Glacier.
“When she (Stone) told me about the event, I had to do it,” he said.
