Viking, Cats named All-State

Three more players from across the Santa Clarita Valley were recognized Friday on Cal-Hi Baseball’s 36th annual All-State Baseball Teams. Two players were named second team and another was named third.

Recent Valencia High graduate Scott Ogrin was named second-team infield. In his senior year with the Vikings, he played shortstop and outfield, and even threw some pitches. He posted a .412 batting average and led the league in both runs and on-base percentage with 38 and .547, respectively. Ogrin was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 27th round.

“I’m so honored to be mentioned with all the other great players. It’s been fun playing for the Vikings and I want to give thanks to all the coaches who helped me improve over the years,” Ogrin said via text message.

West Ranch outfielder Jason Drees made the secondteam multi-purpose list.

Despite playing with a broken thumb this past season, Drees managed a .340 batting average, 21 RBIs and 27 runs as the Wildcats’ leadoff hitter. He’ll walk on at the University of Oregon.

“I feel extremely honored to be recognized by Cal-Hi baseball and to be put on the same list as players like Scott,” Drees said, via text message. “Scott and I grew up playing on the same travel team throughout our entire childhood and it is really cool that we were both put on this list together.”

“I wouldn’t be the player that I am today without the coaches at West Ranch helping me grow as a player throughout my high school career and for getting me ready to go up to the University of Oregon and compete at the next level,” he added.

Another Wildcat, Jack Cunningham, was placed among Cal-Hi’s third-team pitchers. Finishing his senior year with a 3.02 ERA, he threw a no-hitter against Golden Valley on April 13 and a complete-game five-hitter against Norco High in the CIF-SS D1 second round.

All three honorees are fresh high school graduates.

Second team includes 30 players, while third team has 50. Third team is also restricted to seniors from large schools. CalHi’s lists are a collection of the state’s best players from across 1,200 high schools.

West Ranch junior Timmy Josten, Valencia junior Ben Fariss and Stevenson Ranch-resident Hunter Greene (a junior at Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks High last season) were named to the Cal-Hi All-State Underclass team earlier this week.
