TMU’s history on the track
Mustang athlete completes a program first
Last week, members of The Master’s University men’s track and field program made history at the 2017 Westmont Classic w/ Jim Klein Multis on the campus of Westmont College in Santa Barbara.
On Thursday and Friday, Maxwell Hudson wrote a new page in TMU’s history book by becoming the first-ever TMU athlete to participate in a decathlon. Hudson competed in the 100-meter dash (11.89 seconds), long jump
(5.53 meters), shot put (9.44), high jump (1.57) and the 400 (54.25).
On Friday, Hudson returned to compete in the remaining five events: 110 high hurdles (19.43), discus (30.86), pole vault (4.10), javelin (42.49), and 1500 (5 minutes, 12.13 seconds).
Hudson tallied 5,174 points, placing 12th overall. In order to qualify for the NAIA National Championships in the decathlon, an athlete must score a minimum of 5,500 points and post one of the top 16 scores nationally.
On Saturday, TMU’s Gareth Matson made his collegiate debut in the 5,000 race walk, where he finished the event in 27:31.21.
Notably, Matson is the first athlete to ever compete in the collegiate race walk for TMU. Finally TMU’s Noah Frizzell represented the Mustangs in the men’s high jump where he cleared 1.90, tying for fourth overall and setting a new lifetime best.
Now, the Mustangs look forward to next weekend where they’ll compete in the San Francisco Distance Carnival on Friday and Saturday.
Women’s track
and field
On Saturday, members of TMU’s women’s track and field program posted outstanding marks at the 2017 Westmont Classic w/ Jim Klein Multis.
Highlighting TMU’s performance was a quartet of Mustangs (Morgan Pedrick, Ariana Sciarra, Rylee Bishop, and Mikala Fairchild) that competed in the women’s 4x800 relay.
Collectively, TMU placed first overall in the event after finishing the race in 9:24.49, meeting the NAIA’s “A” standard along the way, qualifying to compete at the NAIA National Championships in May. Not to be overlooked, each Mustang set a lifetime best in the 800.
Elsewhere, in the long jump, TMU’s Tess Thompson set a new collegiate best after jumping 4.63, placing 14th overall.
Finally, in the pole vault, Madison Cole cleared 2.88, tying for fifth overall.
TMU will compete in the San Francisco Distance Carnival on Friday and Saturday.
Men’s golf
TMU placed 10th out of 18 teams with a collective score of 889 (296-297-296) at the Battle at Primm on the greens of the Primm Valley Golf Course in Nipton.
Josh Delo led the Mustangs’ efforts by carding a final score of 220 (70-71-79) and tying for 27th overall.
Samuel Eisenhuth earned a collective score of 224 (73-77-75) and tied for 41st place, while Karsten Briley tied for 50th overall at 226 (75-78-73). Finally Joseph Downey (80-74-74) and Robert Penalber (78-75-75) tied for 56th place after carding collective scores of 228.
Next up for the Mustangs is the GSAC Championships from April 24-25 on the links of the Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee, CA.
Baseball
Ryan Bricker bunted in the go-ahead run in the opener and walked with the bases loaded to provide the winner in the nightcap, while Scott Savage pitched his way to a save and a win as The Master’s University swept Arizona Christian 8-7 and 11-9 Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs’ third series win of the season and their second in Golden State Athletic Conference play evened their overall record at 17-17 while improving to 8-10 in the conference.
Saturday’s doubleheader sweep came on the heels of Friday’s 9-4 loss to the Firestorm.
Last Tuesday, the Mustangs also a dropped a non-conference game to Simpson as the Redhawks beat TMU 7-5 at its Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
TMU will take a break from conference play today and start a nine-game home stand against Shepherd University of Los Angeles at 3 p.m. This weekend, TMU hosts San Diego Christian for a crucial three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 11:00 a.m.
