The Signal

Today is Thursday, March 30, the 89th day of 2017 and the 11th day of spring.

On this date in the SCV: In 1933, The Signal reported that Supervisor Jessup issued a statement in regard to his vote on the repeal of the county liquor ordinance. There were constant reports of acquittals, pardons, dismissals and other acts which made the law practically null and void, except as to defendants unable to hire lawyers or exert political influence. Supervisor Jessup’s statement: “My vote for the new ordinance, repealing County Liquor Ordinance No. 650 New Series) is an expression consistent with the majority of the voters of the District which I represent. This repeal ordinance is not a wet or dry issue, but a move to provide a law that is consistent with the laws of the Federal Constitution in the sale and distribution of beverages declared by the Constitution to be nonintoxicating. When the people of the Fifth District overwhelmingly repealed the Wright Act by their vote last fall they decidedly expressed themselves as being in favor of repeal. Consequently, regardless of my personal belief in this matter, it behooves me to follow the dictation of the majority of my constituents and do all possible to bring about a sane solution to this problem.”
