Prep Track & Field: SCV athletes show off skills at Masters Meet
The track & field stars from the Santa Clarita Valley left it all out on the field at the CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet held this past Saturday at El Camino College in Torrance.
Winning first in the discus throw with a personal record of 184 feet, 6 inches CJ McMullen of Hart set a new personal record good enough to qualify him for the CIF state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
Throwers Shyann Franklin (Golden Valley), Natalie Ramirez (West Ranch) and Gabby Sanchez (Canyon) all delivered and will advance to the state meet in both the girls discus and shot put.
Ramirez set a new Foothill League record and won first place in the discus with a throw 155 feet, 10 inches.
Canyon’s lone pole vaulter Christian Valles qualified for the state meet by setting a new personal record at 15-09 for a fourthplace finish on the day.
Distance runner Mariah Castillo of Saugus qualified for state in two events: the 1600-meter and the 3200-meter run.
Winning first in the 3200-meter
with a time of 10:22.24 seconds, Castillo continues to the state level as the top-seeded runner after the meet.
Ethan Danforth of Canyon also heads to the state meet after finishing second in the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 9:03.03. Isaiah Seidman of West Ranch just missed the cut, finishing 10th with a time of 9:09.65 in the event.
The Vikings’ 4x400 relay team (JaCore Johnson, Tanner Berney, Kai Wingo, Antonio Marroquin) locked up sixth place, clocking 3:18.44 to push them through to state and make Valencia history as the first Vikings relay team to advance through the Masters Meet.
Golden Valley’s Antonio Abrego, Khalil Woodard, Tyler Walker and Samuel Malik finished in ninth place in the event with a time of 3:23.59.
Trinity Classical Academy’s Solomon Strader qualified for state in two events: the 200-meter and the 400-meter. Strader finished sixth and second, respectively.
Rounding out the Foothill League representatives is West Ranch’s Shelbi Schauble, a triple jumper, who after beating her previous personal best of 38 feet, 4 inches set a new PR on Saturday with a jump of 38 feet and 8.25 inches to punch her ticket to the state meet.
