City readies fields

The City of Santa Clarita is gearing up for the back-toschool season by renovating its fields.

The 34 parks in the city host special events and various youth sports programs throughout the year, such as the Under Armour Santa Clarita Under the Lights flag football league.

That means the fields will need to be in their best shape, said Bryan Peck, the city’s park administrator.

Peck said the field renovation process, which closes fields from time to time, is yearround and necessary as fields dry out.

The field renovation process utilizes aeration, which is poking holes into the ground for better oxygen and water movement in the soil for turf grass to grow.

Following aeration, a nutrient-rich organic material is applied for healthy root and soil structure.

“Growing season (for turf) is from late March to early April, and it can go into October or early November depending on how warm it stays,” he said.

Canyon Country and Old Orchard Parks renovations were recently completed, Peck said.

Approximately 300 Santa Clarita children participate in the youth sports flag football program and take advantage of the turf when school begins, said city communications specialist Kevin Strauss.

This September, youth sports such as 8-on-8 flag football will be an option for interested residents. More information can be found at santa-clarita.com/YouthSports.
