The Santa Clarita Artists Association is hosting an artist, art teacher and member of the National Watercolor Society in November for an arts workshop.

The association invited Ruth Armitage to demonstrate her artistic style in acrylic during a three-day workshop in which she will also provide mini-demos in watercolor or oil.

Her art has a personal tie to her background, Armitage said in a statement on her website, rutharmitage.com.

“My paintings express my connection to the family farm,” Armitage said on her site. “The abstracted landscapes are inspired by memories, imagination and observation of aerial views. Rich, vibrant color embellished by narrative, symbolic pencil and brush marks tell the story of my connection to the property that has been home to my family.”

Armitage’s work has been profiled on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Oregon Art Beat,” according to a news release by the Artists Association, which also mentioned a 10-page feature in Acrylic Artist Magazine.

“I work in watercolor, acrylic and oil mixed with cold wax, but viewers often have difficulty telling them apart. Each of these mediums has their strength,” she said in a news release. “The fluidity of water media allows me to work very spontaneously, while the ability to build up texture and layers attract me to the use of oil paint. You’ll notice similar shapes, color and line work in all of my paintings.”

Armitage is also a member of the Rocky Mountain National Water Media, California Watercolor Association and the Northwest Watercolor Society, and past president of the Watercolor Society of Oregon.

“This workshop is anticipated to fill up fast,” said SCAA Secretary Jeanne Iler. She can be reached at jeanne2@bluemarble.net for more information.

The workshop is priced at $160 for members, $195 for non-members. The workshop is taking place Nov. 9-11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The location is 23340 Cinema Drive, No. 5, Santa Clarita.
