Jane Terpening Hanson

-

1929-2018

Jane Terpening Hanson passed away at home at Atria Santa Clarita on July 15, 2018. Born on January 8, 1929, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, to Marie Lester Terpening and Ralph Donald Terpening, the family moved to Nyack, New York, where Jane grew up.

She graduated cum laude from Middlebury College in Vermont, where she majored in political science and Spanish. After college, she worked at Time Inc. in New York City. On a crowded train traveling from upstate New York south to New York City, a young man got on the train in Albany and asked whether the seat beside her was vacant. That chance meeting with Tom Hanson led to 65 years of marriage, three children, and two grandchildren.

Tom and Jane moved their young family to California in 1959, and to Newhall in 1962. After spending her children’s early years at home, Jane worked outside the home. She and friend Portia Anderson founded and operated Courses a la Carte in Newhall for several years in the 1970s. She then worked until her retirement as an engineering aide at Sun Oil, now Oryx Energy Co.

Jane was very active in the community, and she especially loved books and reading. She was a founding member and past president of the Santa Clarita chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and she also volunteered at the Santa Clarita branch of the Los Angeles County Library.

Jane is survived by her husband Tom, children Robin, Kari (husband Dave Stolier), and Chris (wife Katherine Wright), and grandsons Andy and Spencer Hanson. A memorial service is being planned for October 13 – for more details, see https://bit.ly/2vDMUhF For those that knew Jane and would like to honor her passing, donations to the Santa Clarita chapter AAUW TechTrek program are being accepted – see santaclaritavalley-ca.aauw.net
