Library exhibit explores technique of weaving
The city of Santa Clarita announced a newly curated exhibit showcasing the “ancient skill” of weaving, with a chance for the public to try the techniques.
The free exhibit, “The Richness and Diversity of Contemporary Weaving,” is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28, through Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, in the Community Room at the Old Town Newhall Library, located at 24500 Main St.
For centuries, the technique of weaving has been practiced for clothing, utilitarian and decorative purposes. At the exhibit, attendees can expect to see how these techniques are used to create the collection’s unique wearables, wall decor and vessels, created by members of the Southern California Handweavers’ Guild.
Jurors of the exhibit, Nicki Bair and Karen Leckart, said in a statement that the items “are our modern take on this ancient skill.”
“Weavers are unique in that what brings them together is the tactile sensation derived from the fibers they select and the structures they create on their looms,” according to a statement from the artists. “Some weavers used a classic, plain weave structure and made it shine with color and texture.”
“Others use simple thread and a complex structure for their inspiration to come alive. Each piece is a unique combination of fiber, structure and inspiration.”
The Southern California Handweavers’ Guild was founded in 1946 to advance the knowledge and practice of hand weaving and textile-related crafts.
Fiber enthusiasts of any level can participate in two free upcoming events:
The artist reception is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, with light appetizers, live music and an opportunity to meet the artists behind the pieces featured in the exhibit.
The Southern California Handweavers’ Guild will present demonstrations and offer attendees a chance to try multiple weaving techniques from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. Those interested can also visit a pop-up boutique to purchase handwoven pieces.
