Pups Join Fight Against Cancer
Join the American Cancer Society’s Bark For LifeTM event Oct. 27 as dogs and their owners raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.
This year’s opening ceremony speaker is Julie Visner, a long-time Bark For Life and Relay For Life participant. Julie is a multiple myeloma patient who knows the importance of that special bond with our four-legged friends during treatment.
Myeloma is incurable and Julie has been in continuous treatment since her diagnosis on Dec. 30, 2009. Even after a stem cell transplant, Julie will remain on chemotherapy for life. But with all these challenges, she still comes to the Bark For Life and Relay For Life events every year.
Bark For Life is a partner event to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Animals are not allowed to participate in the Relay For Life since some attendees are in treatment. The Bark For Life event allows participants to walk with their four-legged friends.
An avid animal lover, Visner will be bringing her three dogs — Nala, Hanna and Jack — so all three will be the Bark Grand Marshals.
Visner also is team captain of Bark team Mutts for Myeloma.
This year’s event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at the West Creek Park, 24247 Village Circle, Santa Clarita. There will be games and activities for two- and four-legged friends, plus a costume contest.
