A light in the dark
Local family to host celebration of life for their son Elliot Newcomb
Santa Clarita residents Sara and Bryan Newcomb are setting up a charity in their son’s memory and to help other children and their families with similar conditions to Elliot’s.
Elliot Andrew Newcomb died at 2 years and 8 months, after defying many odds throughout his short life.
“He only had a little over two and a half years with us,” said his mother, Sara Newcomb. “He definitely had an impact on people — more than some people do in a whole lifetime.”
On Aug. 2, at 2 years and 6 months, he was welcomed into his Saugus home by his family for the first time — after spending the first 895 days of his young life in an intensive care unit for a developed chronic lung disease known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
“I don't want him or his journey to be forgotten,” Newcomb said. “This is not the last of Elliot Newcomb and #love4elliot. I want to do something in his memory.”
#Love4elliot was not only about him, his mother said. “I think it's about finding light in a very dark place, which we did as a family.”
A GoFundMe page originally created for Elliot's medical needs will now be used for his cremation, celebration of life costs and to begin the charity.
His celebration of life is scheduled Monday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Community Church located at 25300 Rye Canyon Road.
There will be a reception to follow at Northpark Clubhouse located at 28201 Northpark Drive.
“We will be doing a balloon release and a dove release,” Newcomb said.
The family asks in lieu of flowers please donate to the GoFundMe. “We will be setting up a charity in Elliot’s name to help other children and their families cope with and navigate the challenging road of long-term hospital living,” his mother said.
#Love4elliot will soon be #lovefromelliot as his parents and siblings, Violet and August will continue sharing love in his memory.
