Recognizing your weakness

- with Hans Kersting

We all want to get better at golf, right? Unfortunately, we are unlikely to ever become as good as we think we should be. That’s just the reality of this crazy game. But how do we work on continuing to get better?

That’s easy. Learn to recognize your weakness.

Weakness in golf can come in many forms. It can come in the form of a consistently poor golf shot, or it could be a tendency to struggle during certain moments of your round. In order to get closer to reaching your full potential as a golfer, you MUST recognize your weakness.

When I was competing, I quickly recognized my weakness of not releasing the golf club properly when I was nervous. The result would be a blocked shot to the right of my target.

Fortunately, by becoming aware of this weak tendency, I learned to anticipate this shot when I was nervous, and I’d aim left of my target. My results improved, and it was all due to the recognition of my weakness. This can work for you, as well. The best way to recognize your weakness is to observe your tendencies when you are nervous on the golf course. Some of you may swing faster when you’re nervous, while others may actually slow down to an excruciatingly slow pace.

If you swing fast when you’re nervous, take a couple of extra deep breaths before your swing to help you slow down. On the other hand, if you slow down when you’re nervous, work on shortening your routine and stay in better rhythm with your round.

These are only a couple examples of weakness in a golf game.

There are many more than I can possibly mention in this article. What’s most important is to understand what YOUR weakness might be. We are all unique in our golf games. Because of this, we all must improve in our own way.

Once you learn to recognize your weakness, you are on the path to getting better.

In order to get closer to reaching your full potential as a golfer, you MUST recognize your weakness.
