Valencia Toastmasters schedule open house
Valencia Toastmasters is scheduled to host its first open house of 2019 on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
“There are very few places to practice public speaking in front of an audience,” said Elizabeth Gilbert, Valencia Toastmasters vice president of education.
The free event is scheduled 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Valencia BMW on Valencia Boulevard.
The guest speaker will be author and blogger Tom Iland, who focuses on educating, inspiring and motivating everyone impacted by autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
“We work with everybody,” Gilbert said. “It’s a very open environment.”
Valencia Toastmasters has been serving Santa Clarita for more than 40 years, Gilbert said. “It is one of the oldest toastmaster clubs in Los Angeles.”
The group is open to anyone 18 and older looking to improve their ability to speak, both in prepared speeches and impromptu speaking, Gilbert said.
“Our club offers a friendly, supportive environment,” according to the club’s website. “Our focus is on ensuring everyone has the opportunity to grow and improve their communication and leadership skills.”
“The group helps with things like eliminating fear, brain freeze and other common things that may affect you,” Gilbert said. “It allows you to read an audience.”
The club meets every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The meetings are held at Valencia BMW in the professional conference room, located at 23435 Valencia Blvd.
“It’s a great place to practice public speaking,” Gilbert said. “It’s wonderful to make that available to the community.”
