Regional Shopping Mall Is Closer
The Santa Clarita Valley’s longawaited regional shopping mall took a big step closer to reality Wednesday.
The occasion was a public hearing in front of the Regional Planning Commission which heard for the first time Newhall Land and Farming Company’s plans for the 109-acre center.
Newhall Land’s presentation fell on receptive ears, as none of the commissioners raised any objections to the project.
Support for the proposed shopping center appeared unanimous. The commission received “no telephone calls or letters either way,” according to commission chairman Carolyn Llewellyn. Nor did anyone attend the hearing to contest Newhall Land’s plan.
Located between Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard west of the county civic center, the future center will provide “good access for the entire valley,” said Newhall Land Vice President Rick Stephens.
Among the proposed occupants of the shopping mall will be four major department stores, an amphitheater, and an ice-skating rink. There will also be a number of restaurants and professional offices.
Mrs. Llewellyn was particularly supportive of the plan, commenting “I can appreciate the need (for a shopping mall) in that area.” She noted that the opening of a May Company in the San Fernando Valley was “the biggest event of my life” at the time.
The public hearing was closed without further comment.
A vote on the required zone change is expected next Wednesday, and then the zone change request will proceed to the Board of Supervisors for final approval.
Following the expected acceptance of the Board of Supervisors, Newhall Land will need to obtain a conditional use and building permits before commencing construction.
