Alamo may surrender
Tony Alamo will end a months-long FBI search this week by turning himself in to federal investigators, a volunteer for Alamo’s Holy Alamo Christian Church said Monday.
Alamo, 54, has reportedly reached an agreement with federal authorities and is en route to Los Angeles from an undisclosed location to turn himself in.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation began its search for Alamo after local authorities were unable to find Alamo to face charges of child abuse at Alamo’s Holy Alamo Christian Church in Saugus.
A federal warrant was issued in April for Alamo’s arrest for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Alamo, who has churches in Arkansas and on Sierra Highway in Saugus, said last month he was not running from the FBI — but refused to disclose his location because he wanted to continue preaching the word of God.
But church volunteer Dave Trevino said Monday Alamo has struck a deal with FBI officials and is en route to Los Angeles to turn himself in.
“Tony Alamo is turning himself in … They’re giving him two to three days to come in to Los Angeles to turn himself in,” Trevino said, adding Alamo could not be reached for comment because the religious leader is traveling.
The search for Alamo almost came to an end in July when the FBI conducted a fruitless raid on a condominium reportedly rented by the religious leader.
Alamo said last month he was not at the condominium when investigators arrived because God instructed him to leave.
Trevino said the FBI agreed to drop all federal charges against Alamo, but FBI officials could not be reached to confirm this Monday because of the Yom Kippur and Columbus Day holiday.
“They are going to drop the charges,” Trevino said, adding, “He’s going to prove that they’re wrong in those false accusations.”
Alamo originally wished to turn himself in to the media, Trevino said, because he feared for his safety should he turn himself in to the FBI.
Trevino said an agreement was cached between Alamo and the FBI after Alamo spoke to FBI investigators Sunday.
Alamo was charged with child endangerment a year ago after allegedly instructing church members to beat a follower’s son.
But Alamo said last month the charges are uncalled for and, “All I do is believe what the Bible — says is that you should spank children.”
